I was talking to one of my buddies last week about airsoft and he mentioned he was selling all his gear and getting out of the sport. Anyways he offered to sell me a G&P M4A1 Marine with five mags, optics, and some other gear. He wanted $200 for it, lowest would be $170.

Here's part of my dilemma. Apparently he lent it to a buddy who ran a bunch of cheap BBs through it and now it needs a new hop up. I was wondering if those BBs could have done anything else to the gun, or is this deal damn good as it is? If he's throwing in MOLLE gear and what not I may take my chances.

What do you guys think? Oh and I should mention I have little experience with airsoft.

G&P is a good company and makes quality guns but unfortunately the hopup is tricky business especially for a beginner. You could replace the hopup for no more than $30 or $40 but the problem is that they come disassembled. G&P usually uses a one piece hopup which are readily available and abundant and offered by numerous companies. About 99% of airsofters I know tech their own guns and im sure if you did end up going for this deal (It sounds like a good deal as long as the gun and gear arent too beat to hell) and bought a new hopup and came to a game someone there would be able to assemble and install the new hopup unit for you so you could play that day.

I am sure the hopup chamber isn't the part that's ruined. It just needs a new rubber. A good one is about $15, and you could either find someone who knows how to put it in for you, or pay someone no more than $10.

So basically if the rest of the gun is in good shape, it's a reasonable deal.

As someone who who's tricked out their paintball marker I think I could handle fixing it. In fact part of the reason I want to get into airsoft is to go nuts with paint and mods. Can't do that with my firearms since they could blow my hands off.

I'll be inspecting it tomorrow. Thanks for the advice!

The friend I'm buying it off of didn't break it. He lent it to a friend who broke it with what he believes were cheap BBs. I'll ask him more questions when I meet up with him tomorrow.

I'm pretty anxious to get it now, mainly cause I want to go to one of the games on Saturday lol

I got the rifle! For $150 with 5 mags, a reflex sight, and a whole bunch of BBs. One problem, no charger. I'm going to try and find one tomorrow.

I haven't gotten the thing apart yet...

Go for a Smart Charger is you can. The best bet for Charging Batteries.

Well if you can make it out to the quarry I always have two batteries on me and you can use one if you need it. Plus someone there will be able to go over the ins and outs with ya.

Well I've run into a problem. I can't get the damn pin out that holds the receivers together! From everything I've gathered G&P ARs have a faux pine near the stock and a functional one by the magwell. The faux one comes out with some force, but the other one isn't budging and I used a mallet and punch as hard as I was comfortable with. It should come out with thumb pressure but it won't.

My buddy never opened it. Any suggestions? Or did I find the one G&P M4 that's different from all the others I've seen? I'd appreciate any help because no gun has ever given me this much trouble and I'm pretty god about taking stuff apart and putting it back together.

My dad got the pin out with a metal hammer and punch. So I have the disassembled gun and hop up unit in front of me. What does a screwed up nub look like? I can't tell. Wanna order the part but I want to be sure it's the nub first.

When I reassemble I'll let you know how it goes.

I just ordered a hop up bucking, smart charger, and hand guard from airsoftgi. I'm hoping I can get this thing squared by the end of the week.

I have the hop in pieces, not sure what you'd want to see. Besides I lost the nub and one of the springs lol. When I took out the hop up the nub looked warped and it wouldn't retract much at all.

given that your fairly new to this, if you can't find a helpful guide online it might be best to have someone walk you through it in person.

ziplock bags are your friends.

Ahaha. Good idea. I found a replacement for the spring I lost. It's the one that pushes up against the receiver. I found a great video on how to re-assemble the hop up. These airsofts are a lot more complicated than my firearms, but I'm use to this kind of stuff. I rather enjoy it actually. The only thing I ever hated about maintaining guns was cleaning really bad carbon deposits (happens when you shoot revolvers with ammo that has a shorter case than your chambers, or cheap Russian ammo that I love). It's nice that airsofts shoot little plastic BBs. Much more enjoyable to maintain. Which reminds me, I have a revolver to clean :(

New hop up bucking installed and I got my other parts including my battery charger (which I'll be returning since I found my dad has a smart charger that charged our old RC cars with identical batteries!). Those new Magpull handguards are sexy!

When I went to fire it was really inconsistent, meaning sometimes it would fire, sometimes it wouldn't. It looked like a loose connection. You guys are probably gonna think I'm nuts for doing this without any experience, but I had the entire gearbox apart and my dad tested the connections with a meter. Apparently the trigger tab was real dirty. After he cleaned it off and I assembled the gun it functions flawlessly. I have yet to do an accuracy test though, so I don't know if replacing the hop up bucking fixed anything. My dad said he hit a tree on the other side of our property though lol

Oh I'll be there. Already requested off work. I look forward to playing with you guys. Hopefully it won't be too hot with my asthma and all.

Sadly my gun still has the same problem it had before it was fixed up. It's shooting all over the place. Only thing I can think of is that the clip holding the barrel to the hop up is damaged. I'll see if some epoxy will help. After that I'm out of ideas. Maybe someone on the field could help me out.

What eight BB are you using? Try some .25s and see if anything improves. I have seen cheaper .20 BBs fly all over the place. ;)

Four things basically determine if a gun will shoot accurately or not.

1.) Consistent compression / power output from the gearbox.
2.) Quality hopup rubber (properly installed)
3.) Clean Bore (some retards will tell you to lube your barrel. Disregard. Clean and Dry)
4.) Quality high-polish ammo.

If you got your gearbox apart and managed to get it together again correctly you're most likely halfway mechanically competent. That said, you're probably going to be best off getting someone with some experience to look at your rifle in person to help you out. I do not recommend doing this on the field, as that's the single easiest way to lose parts.

At the very least, I'd get someone who knows what theyre looking at to check out the gun before you epoxy anything.

^ What he said.Do NOT USE EPOXY ON YOUR GUN! Have someone look at your gun that knows what they are doing.
